I’m the biggest proponent of the “don’t knock it until you try” school, and my journey with donghua (Chinese anime) has really, really shown me that it’s the best thing to do.
I started watching donghua early in the year, and, you guys, I’m positively hooked right now – they’re all so interesting and surprisingly complex and I’ve literally bullied everyone around me into watching.
All this is to say that if you’ve been on the lookout for the most interesting donghuas to check out, you might want to read until the end of this article.
In this article, I’ve listed some special donghua on Netflix that I genuinely feel everyone needs to watch at least once.
There’s everything from swoony BL Chinese anime to action-packed adventures that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Netflix’s collection of interesting donghua (Chinese anime) is soulful and amazing; here are a few to get started with:
1. Legend Of Exorcism
Kong Hongjun, who’s part-human and part-yao, leaves Mount Taiheng for the human world.
He has three tasks: find his father’s killer, get rid of the Black Jiao and its yao allies in Chang’an, and return the Heart Lamp to the Chen family.
But on his first night, the Heart Lamp ends up in General Li Jinglong’s body.
And so, Kong Hongjun joins Chang’an’s Court of Exorcism and ends up working with Li Jinglong, who dislikes yao, to rid the city of yao.
Meanwhile, he must hide his yao identity and retrieve the Heart Lamp from Li Jinglong before it’s too late.
2. No Doubt In Us
Set in an ancient Chinese palace, the serious Emperor Xiao Jinyun and lively Empress Xu Yu don’t get along even though they’ve been married for some time.
But a strange accident makes them switch bodies, and when they start experiencing each other’s lives and dealing with new revelations at every turn, they develop a deeper appreciation for each other.
But there are dangers in the palace and beyond, and if the royal astrologer can’t figure out how to switch them back, they might face serious problems, including their own deaths.
This is arguably one of the most popular romantic donghua on Netflix that’s just the sweetest thing ever – Jinyun and Xuyu will live in my heart forever!
3. The Daily Life of The Immortal King
Wang Ling is a high school student who seems relaxed and carefree, and he avoids trouble as much as he can.
But he is actually the reincarnation of a powerful lord and he has a super strong power inside him that could be really dangerous.
To control it, his parents give him a special amulet, but when he gets into a new high school and starts experiencing lots of new emotions, the amulet gradually becomes weaker.
When he reluctantly joins a tournament with his friends and a potential love interest, he’s pushed to the extreme a good number of times, but he must be careful because the amulet finally breaking means the world might get destroyed.
4. Scissor Seven
Wu Liuqi is a bounty hunter who might seem scary but is actually not very good at his job.
He can use special scissors with his mind and change his appearance, but he often messes up his missions.
This is because he’s just a regular kid and not cut out for this work, and he’s simply trying to remember his past with the help of his bird friend Dai Bo.
He works as a hairdresser during the day and does bounty hunting to pay off his debt, and his different activities somehow connect to his quest to find his lost memories.
This action-packed Chinese anime available on Netflix is funny and super, super engaging – you definitely don’t want to miss it!
5. Heaven’s Official Blessing
Eight hundred years ago, Xie Lian was a beloved prince in Xian Le.
He went to Heaven but got sent back to Earth, and later, he went to Heaven again but got kicked out soon after.
Now, after 800 years, he ascends to Heaven for the third time, but everyone makes fun of him.
On his first god task, he meets a spooky ghost king who has been watching him for a long time, and this kicks off the romance in this Netflix BL Donghua.
6. God Troubles Me
In the modern world, gods and demons struggle to keep balance because society is changing quickly.
To fix things, the gods send a team of gods and monsters to find a special “key” for salvation.
Su Moting is a unique girl whose parents asked her to leave home and be on her own.
She then meets the handsome god Tianjin and the mysterious demon cat Dukui, and this marks the start of Su Moting’s exciting new life.
This is one of the best Chinese anime on Netflix that’s equal parts sweet and melodramatic.
7. Qi Refining For 3000 Years
Bai Qiuran is a student of Qingming and has the potential to be his successor.
Even though he’s not very powerful yet, he thinks he’ll become stronger soon.
So, he decides to leave the mountain for new adventures.
The Chinese animes available on Netflix in this post are all super interesting (vetted by ME!), and I have no doubt that you’re going to absolutely love them.
